Siddhant Gawai claims a double at 17th G H Raisoni Memorial Chess Festival 2024

16-year-old Siddhant Gawai scored an unbeaten 10/11 to win 17th G H Raisoni Memorial Rating Open 2024. IM Anwesh Upadhyaya also scored the same. He secured second place on tie-breaks. Siddhant defeated Anwesh in the sixth round. FM Sauravh Khherdekar scored sole 9/11 to finish third. Sidhant won the Rapid Rating Open scoring 8/9. Four more players - Anwesh, Sauravh, Shaunak Badole and CM Vaibhav Jayant Raut finished with the same score 8/9. They were placed second to fifth respectively according to tie-breaks. Vaibhav became champion in the Blitz Rating Open scoring an unbeaten 8.5/9. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. Teenagers - CM Arush Chitre, Bhaavan Kolla and Ansh Dhanvij scored 8/9 each to be placed second, third and fourth respectively. The total prize fund combining all three tournaments was ₹451000. Vaibhav Jayant Raut dominates Blitz Rating Open

Siddhant Gawai won both Classical and Rapid Rating tournaments. Back in 2022, Siddhant won the 15th edition of Blitz Rating Open. Thus, he has now won all three formats at G H Raisoni Memorial Chess Festival. These two are Siddhant's first two rating tournament triumphs of the year. Top three prizes in the Rapid event were ₹31000 and a trophy, ₹20000 and ₹10000 each. Classical and Rapid events witnessed same top three finishers in the exact same order, only the score is different. The top three finishers in the Blitz won a trophy each, the champion won a DGT Clock. It was also CM Vaibhav Jayant Raut's first rating open tournament victory in 2024.

A total of 274 players including an IM took part from various parts of the country in this six-day eleven-round Swiss League Rating Open. The tournament was organized by G H Raisoni Sports and Cultural Foundation and Kalpana Prakash Welfare Foundation at G H Raisoni Institute of Engineering and Technology in Nagpur, Maharashtra from 9th to 14th June. The time control of the event was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment.

The time control of the event was 15 minutes + 5 seconds increment.
