Daksh Goyal and Mrittika Mallick are National Sub-Junior Open and Girls 2023 Champions
Daksh Goyal (DEL), Jihan Tejas Shah (GUJ) and Samyak Dharewa (WB) scored 8.5/11 each at 48th National Sub-Junior Under-15 Open 2023. Daksh won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Jihan and Samyak were placed second and third respectively. Only Daksh remained undefeated among them. Mrittika Mallick (WB) scored 9/11 to become champion in 39th National Sub-Junior Under-15 Girls 2023. Despite losing the fourth round and scoring a half point in the next round, she won the next five games and finished a half point ahead of the rest. Her statemate Sneha Halder (WB) secured second place 8.5/11. Sannidhi Ramakrishna Bhat (MAH), the only girl to beat the eventual champion, Mrittika, finished third 8/11. The total prize fund combining Open and Girls section was ₹900000. The top three prizes in both Open and Girls sections were ₹90000, ₹70000 and ₹58000 each respectively. Photos: Raksha Jajoo
West Bengal claims maximum podium
Paras Dilip Bhoir (MAH), Daksh Goyal (DEL) and Jihan Tejas Shah (GUJ) were the three leaders 8/10 heading into the final round. Daksh drew with Jihan, top seed IM Mayank Chakraborty (ASM) and Samyak Dharewa (WB) defeated Paras and FM Md. Imran (AP) respectively. Daksh became champion in Open section, Jihan second and Samyak third. In the Girls section, Mrittika Mallick (WB) was the sole leader 8.5/10 going into the last round. She drew against Sachi Jain (DEL) to become a clear champion 9.5/11. Sneha Halder (WB) and Sannidhi Ramakrishna Bhat (MAH) won their respective games against Sherali Pattnaik (UTT) and Nivedita V C (TN). This is Daksh's second AICF National triumph after he won the 10th National Amateur Below 2000 Open 2023. For Mrittika, it is her third National title. She is the reigning 33rd National Under-17 Girls 2023 champion and in 2022, she won 34th National Under-14 Girls Championship.

Mayank - Daksh, Round 8

35.Nd7? was a questionable decision by IM Mayank Chakraborty (ASM, 2403). 35.Rb7 Rxb7 36.Nxb7 Qb6 37.Nc5 would have allowed White to get rid of the b3-pawn. However 35.Nd7 created an opportunity for Black Qxd7 36.Rxd7 Kxd7 now White cannot take the passed b-pawn. Moreover, Black can combine the powefr of rook and knight to promote his pawn with ease. That happened in the game and he went on to win.

Mrittika - Shubhi, Round 9

WFM Shubhi Gupta (UP, 1902) made a critical error 23...Qg5? in a sharp position. Mrittika Mallick (WB, 1970) correctly found the best continuation 24.Rf5 Qe3+ 25.Bf2 Qxe4 26.Rxf7+ and White won the game in the next few moves. This crucial victory put Mrittika in the sole lead, heading into the penultimate round.

A total of 125 including an IM in the Open and 74 players in the Girls tournament took part from various states across the country. The events were organized by Jalgaon District Chess Association at Anubhūti School in Jalgaon, Maharashtra from 27th December to 4th January 2024. The eleven-round Swiss league tournament had a time control of 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment from move no.1
