Aditya Samant wins Young Masters Rapid with a 100% score

13-year old Aditya Samant scored 8.0/8 by winning all his games and finished 1.5 points ahead of the runner-up to win Young Masters Open Rapid in Pune on 1st September organized parents of Pune chess players. IM-norm holder Aditya beat WIM Aakanksha Hagawane, the eventual runner-up, in the penultimate round to take a full point heading into the final round. WIM Aakanksha Hagawane had won Silver in Blitz and Bronze in Rapid at Asian Juniors couple of months ago. This one day rapid tournament provided her the perfect practice she needed as she scored a perfect 7.0/7 to clinch Gold in West Asian Youth and Junior under-20 girls.

Organizer Ganga Pant's note

Chess Parents at Pune have been organizing practice tournaments over the last couple of months and finally graduated to organize a bigger scale tournament on 1st September 2019 - Young Masters Rapid Tournament at Mangalwadi, Senapati Bapat Road, Pune. FA Dipti Shidore served as chief arbiter for the event that got a very good response with as many as 61 FIDE rated players out of 82 participating players. Pune’s very own WIM Akanksha Hagawane playing the tournament as third seed, there was a very strong field out there and tournament had some very keen and observant moments of quality chess being played out.

The event organizer Ganga Pant along with other co-organizers (also chess parents) Deepika Negi, Ashwini Dandawate and Nitin Undale said that the event was aimed at creating more local spaces for the young talent so that they save on travel times and get to practice more within the home turf. The event generated a lot of interest and participants gave rave reviews of the tournament, which had a prize fund of ₹12000, apart from trophies and medals for under age categories and also offered a chess book as first prize for the age category winners - something that was very well received.

While chess parents feel encouraged to conduct more such events in the future, they do feel that more people need to come forward and create more and more local spaces in order to give a platform to young talent all across the region.
