Open: India - Azerbaijan: 3-1
GM D Gukesh (2764) and GM Arjun Erigaisi (2778) scored fine wins against GM Aydin Suleymanli (2632) and GM Rauf Mamedov (2637) respectively. GM R Praggnanandhaa (2750) drew his second game in-a-row. This time against GM Nijat Abasov (2626). GM Vidit Gujrathi (2720) missed a win against GM Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (2733) and it ended in a draw. GM Pentala Harikrishna was rested.
Gukesh - Suleymanli
GM D Gukesh lost the last Classical game against GM Aydin Suleymanli at Grand Swiss 2023. It was time for him to improve the head-to-head score. 10...Nh5 was a mistake by Black. Gukesh grabbed his chance 11.Nxe5 Nxg3 12.Bxf7+ Kf8 13.Ng6+ Kg7 14.fxg3 Kxf7 15.Nxh8+ Qxh8 16.d4 White grabbed a rook and pawn for two minor pieces, destroyed Black's castling rights and weakened the king's position. He could not recover for the rest of the game. Gukesh scored the first win of the round for his team.
Arjun - Rauf
The sign of an extremely strong player is, taking advantage of a very small advantage and converting into a substantial one. 28.Bc6 Ra7 29.g5 Nd7 30.Rd4 and we reached the above position. 30...Nb6 31.Rb3 e5 32.Rdxb4 Nxd5 33.Rb8+ Kg7 34.Bxd5 Rxd5 35.R3b7 Rxb7 36.Rxb7 Rd4 37.b4 and White went on to win the game utilizing his connected passed pawns on the queenside. Arjun Erigaisi is an amazing form.
Mamedyarov - Vidit
GM Shakhriyar Mamedyarov made the mistake of playing 24.Qb7? His opponent, GM Vidit Gujrathi correctly spotted 24...Qf5 threatening Bd5. 25.Ra8 Bd5 26.Rxf8+ Kxf8 27.Qb8+ Kf7 28.Qf4 e5 29.Qe3 g5 30.h3 h5 31.Qa7+
What Black needed to do to stop the checks is 31...Kg8 32.Qb8+ Qf8 White runs out of checks and the knight cannot be defended. Vidit misplayed after a few moves and allowed White to play 35.g4 preventing Black from playing g4 himself. The game eventually ended in a draw.
Ivanchuk - Rapport
GM Vasyl Ivanchuk's king is not in grave danger even though it may seem so. 20.Bh6 e6 21.Bxf8 keeps White in the game. However, 20.Be5? e6-+ 21.Qf6 Rxd5+ 22.Ke4 Rxe5+ and GM Richard Rapport won the game in four more moves.
Mustafa - Magnus
The world no.1, GM Magnus Carlsen was in a bit of trouble against the Turkiye no.4, GM Mustafa Yilmaz. White needed to improve his bishop's position 28.Bc2 Qxg2+ 29.Kxg2 Kg7 30.Bb3 Bc6 31.Rd6 Rc8 32.Re6 would have given White a decisive advantage.
