A rapid and blitz tournament with 2 lakh prize fund in Mumbai
Amar Godbole was a passionate chess player in his younger days. He wanted to become a strong chess player, but education first and then work made his chess career take a backseat. With the mindset of providing a platform for other budding talents of the city, First move Chess Club and We One Events will organize an Open Rapid and Blitz Chess Tournament on 19th and 20th January 2019 at Prabodhankar Thackeray Krida Sankul, Vile-Parle (East). Total 2 lakhs worth of prize fund is up for grabs. There will be prizes in various age group category and some special prizes in the form of ChessBase Premium Account. Players of Mumbai will remember that Prabodhan Thackeray is the same place where the famous Bournvita inter-school tournaments used to take place.
A Rapid and Blitz tournament in Mumbai with 2 lakh prize money

Writes Amar Godbole, the organizer of this event, on his Facebook page: "Somethings in life give you immense pleasure no matter how stressful your day to day life is.. chess for me is certainly one of the things!! I am organizing a grand chess event in Vile-Parle where around 500 chess players from across Maharashtra and India will be exhibiting their chess skills over the board.. The beauty of this event is we have a 5 and a half year old girl and a 78 year old veteran participating in the competition.. the fun element of the game is not compromised and the playing experience for players will be over the top.. I hope this beautiful game of chess gets more awareness and love as much as any popular sport today!"

The rapid and blitz events in Mumbai
The city of Mumbai is quite active when it comes to rapid and blitz events. There are a lot of rapid specialists in the city who have moulded their styles to score maximally in these tournaments and earn good prize money. However, there are also players who participate in such events with the aim to get better prepared for bigger events, like WIM Bhagyashree Thipsay. Former National and Asian Champion is playing at the above event. When we recently interviewed her, she said that she used the rapid and blitz chess scene in the city of Mumbai to keep herself in touch with the game. No wonder she performed so well at the Mumbai IIFLW above 2100 Elo tournament. Here's her interview with IM Sagar Shah:
