Diptayan Ghosh decimates Tarpex Tarpaulin presents 1st TCCCA Rapid Rating Open 2024

Top seed, the reigning National Rapid and Blitz champion, GM Diptayan Ghosh scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Tarpex Tarpaulin presents 1st TCCCA Rapid Rating Open 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the field. 11-year-old Niladri Banerjee scored 8/9 to secure second place. He finished ahead of eight IMs and a WIM. Five players - IM Aronyak Ghosh, IM Kaustuv Kundu, IM Neelash Saha, Ankit Ray and Kumar Gaurav scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed third to seventh respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000. The top three prizes were ₹40000, ₹30000 and ₹20000 along with a trophy each respectively. Niladri Banerjee finishes ahead of eight IMs and a WIM

GM Diptayan Ghosh was the sole leader 7.5/8, going into the final round. Five players - IM Aronyak Ghosh, IM Kaustuv Kundu, IM Subhayan Kundu, IM Shahil Dey and Niladri Banerjee were at 7/8 each. Diptayan defeated Subhayan to become a clear champion. Niladri won against Shahil to secure second place. Aronyak drew with Kaustuv to finish third. Niladri is the youngest top ten finisher of the event. This was third rapid rating tournament in West Bengal to feature 300+ players and it was certainly the strongest one as a GM, eight IMs and a WIM took part.

IM Subhayan Kundu (2225) played 13.Be3 exd4 now he needed to recapture with his bishop to keep the e4-pawn defended as 14.Nxd4? ran into Nxe4 15.Nxc6 Bxc6 16.Bxa7 Rxa7 17.Qd4 Ra8 18.Rxe4?? Bxe4-+ gave GM Diptayan Ghosh (2437) a decisive advantage and he won the game to become the champion. The game has a lot of tricks and tactics as Diptayan mentioned in the interview.

A total of 304 players including a GM, eight IMs and a WIM took part from various states all over India in this two-day nine round Rapid Rating Open tournament. It was organized by Town Club Chinsurah and Town Club Chess Academy at Chinsurah Indoor Stadium in Chinsurah, Hooghly, West Bengal on 31st August and 1st September 2024. The time control of the event was 20 minutes + 5 seconds increment per move.
