Pune GP R4: Divya Deshmukh bounces back, Humpy wins two in-a-row

IM Divya Deshmukh bounced back with a win over IM Melia Salome (GEO) in Round 4 of FIDE Pune GP. Divya had to grind a major piece endgame, until her opponent faltered. GM Koneru Humpy won her second consecutive game by defeating IM Polina Shuvalova. Both Humpy and Divya are at 3/4 each. A half point behind the sole leader, GM Jiner Zhu (CHN) who defeated IM Alina Kashlinskaya (POL). The All-Indian clash between GM Harika Dronavalli and GM R Vaishali ended in a draw. IM Nurgyul Salimova (BUL) scored her first win of the event against IM Batkhuyag Munguntuul (MGL). Round 5 starts today from 3 p.m. IST. Photos: Anmol Bhargav

For the second time in this tournament since the first round, four out of five games were decisive.

IM Divya Deshmukh (2460) played against IM Melia Salome (GEO, 2293) for the first time. Divya won the queen and double rook endgame after grinding it and eventually her opponent crumbled.

Polina- Humpy: 0-1

GM Koneru Humpy (2528) played two Classical rated games against IM Polina Shuvalova (2500). Both ended in draws. However, this time, Humpy got herself connected passed pawns on the queenside in a double rook endgame. She used it to her advantage to win the game.
