Prague Masters 2024 R5: Abdusattorov maintains his sole lead, now World no.5, Praggnanandhaa beats Vidit
Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) defeated Mateusz Bartel (POL) in the fifth round of Prague International Chess Festival 2024 Masters. The former World Rapid champion is now World no.5 in the live ratings. He is still at the top 4/5, followed by Parham Maghsoodloo (IRI) 3.5/5 and Richard Rapport (ROU) 3/5. D Gukesh suffered a loss against David Navara (CZE). The former made a miscalculation in the same color bishop endgame. R Praggnanandhaa showed his resourcefulness against Vidit Gujrathi to score a victory. Vidit grabbed a wrong pawn when his opponent just activated his rook in the major piece endgame. Aansh Nandan Nerurkar got back to winning ways to maintain his sole lead 4.5/5. Today is a rest day. Round 6 for Masters, Challengers and Futures start tomorrow 4th March at 3 p.m. local time, 7:30 p.m. IST. Photos: Petr Vrabec/Prague International Chess Festival
Aansh Nerurkar stays ahead
Mateusz - Abdusattorov: 0-1
The only Classical rated game played between Mateusz Bartel (POL, 2660) and Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB, 2744) took place in 2015. Mateusz won that game. Abdusattorov was then only 11-years-old. Now he is much stronger and a former World Rapid champion. This win moved him up to World no.5 in the live ratings.
19.Qe4 offered up the a2-pawn. Black gobbled it 19...Qxa2 20.Qh4 Qxb2 21.Bxe7 h6 22.Qf4 Ba4 23.Nc6 Bxc6 24.dxc6 Rxc6 25.Bxd6 Rxe1+ 26.Rxe1 Qxc2 White did not get enough compensation for the two pawns. 27.g4 Rc8 28.Qf3 Qb3 and it's over.
Gukesh - Navara: 0-1
D Gukesh (2743) faced David Navara (CZE, 2667) only twice in Classical rated games until this game. He lost the first one and drew the next. This time, he had a good opportunity against the Czech Republic no.1.
White has an extra pawn. The idea behind 31...Kc7 is Rb8-b3. 32.Bc3 was the best way to deal with it Rb8 33.Ke2 Rb3 34.Bf6 now if Black takes the a3-pawn Rg1 drops Black's g6. Instead, 32.Rg1 Rb8 33.Bc3 Rb1+ 34.Be1 Bg7 allowed Black to get back in the game and White's advantage evaporated.
48.Kf3 or Kg3 which is correct? One of them saves the game, while the other costs White the full point. Gukesh chose the wrong one and lost the game.
Praggnanandhaa - Vidit: 1-0
Vidit Gujrathi (2747) won his first three Classical games against R Praggnanandhaa (2747). The latter won the next three. Praggnanandhaaa made it a point to increase his head-to-head score against Vidit to four in Classical games.
Praggnanandhaa is a resourceful player. Even though he was down by a pawn and it was a difficult major piece endgame. He still found a nice resource 43.e5! to activate his rook. 43...Qxe5 44.Rxd4 now Rb3 is what Black needed to play. Instead, 44...axb4?? turned out to be a blunder as 45.Re4 Qd5 46.Kh2 Ra2 47.Qc8+ put Black's king in deep trouble.
