Prague Masters 2024 R2: Gukesh beats Thai Dai Van

by Shahid Ahmed - 29/02/2024

D Gukesh defeated Thai Dai Van Nguyen (CZE) in Round 2 of Prague International Chess Festival 2024 Masters. The Czech Republic no.2 made an exchange sacrifice, which did not work out the way he wanted. A blunder in time trouble cost R Praggnanandhaa his game against Parham Maghsoodloo (IRI). He emerged an early sole leader 2/2. Vidit Gujrathi drew against Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) comfortably. Gukesh vs Vidit and Praggnanandhaa vs Richard Rapport (ROU) will take place in Round 3. Aansh Nandan Nerurkar has won his second game in-a-row, to gain an early sole lead 2/2. Round 3 for Masters, Challengers and Futures start today at 3 p.m. local time, 7:30 p.m. IST. D Gukesh defeated Thai Dai Van Nguyen (CZE)

Thai Dai Van - Gukesh: 0-1

D Gukesh (2743) faced the Czech Republic no.2, Thai Dai Van Nguyen (2630) for the first time in a rated game. After a lot of maneuvering arising out of the English Opening, White decided to sacrifice an exchange.

Position after 35.Rxe5

35.Rxe5 Bxe5 36.Rxe5 bxc4 37.Nf4 Bd7 38.dxc4 Rxc4 now 39.Bd5 does not work due to Qf6. Similarly after 39.Bf1 Qf6 is still there. The exchange sacrifice did not yield much for White. 40.Rd5 Rc7 41.b5 Rfc8 42.Qxd4 Qxd4 43.Rxd4 and soon White went on to lose the game.

It was a tough game for Thai Dai Van Nguyen (CZE) against D Gukesh

Parham - Praggnanandhaa: 1-0

R Praggnanandhaa (2747) does not have a good score against Parham Maghsoodloo (IRI, 2715) in Classical rated games. That did not improve yesterday. In a difficult position, Praggnanandhaa blundered while going towards the first time control.

Position after 37...Ne6

Black's position was already not easy to play. In time trouble, he blundered 37...Ne6?? 38.Rxf6 immediately finished things.
