Himal Gusain clear first at Ciudad de Oviedo Open for the second consecutive year
IM Himal Gusain scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 10th Ciudad de Oviedo Open 2024. He bettered his previous years performance by scoring a half point and finished a full point ahead of the rest. Eight players scored 7/9 each. Among them, GM Mikel Huerga Leache (ESP) and IM Ismael Alshameary Puente (ESP) secured second and third place respectively. Himal defeated both of them in Round 7 and 6 respectively. The top three prizes were €1200 + 1 year Chessable PRO Membership + 200€ Voucher for Chessable Courses, €800 + 6 months Chessable PRO Membership and €700 + 3 months Chessable PRO Membership. IM Himal Gusain had a full point lead 7.5/8, heading into the final round. Six players were trailing him by a half point at 6.5/8 each. Himal drew his final round game against FM Melis Mamatov (KGZ) to become a clear champion. GM Mikel Huerga Leache (ESP) and IM Ismael Alshameary Puente (ESP) drew with GM Daniel H Campora (ARG) and IM Marcelo Panelo (ARG) to finish second and third respectively.

IM Himal Gusain (2511) got a substantial advantage out of the opening against GM Mikel Huerga Leache (ESP, 2396). 8...Na6 allowed 9.Qh5+ g6 10.Nxg6 hxg6 11.Qxh8 Black never got enough compensation for the lost exchange. White went on to convert his advantage and win the game.
A total of 237 players including 3 GMs, 7 IMs and a WGM took part from 19 countries across the world in this seven-day nine round Rating Open tournament. It was organized by Club de Ajedrez Ciudad Naranco at Conference and Exhibitions Centre in Oviedo, Spain from 5th to 11th August 2024. The time control of the event was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment from move no.1.
