Grand Swiss 2023 R4: Vaishali crushes Mariya in 23 moves
IM Vaishali R is in a fantastic form. She defeated the former Women's World Champion, GM Mariya Muzychuk (UKR) in just 23 moves in the fourth round of FIDE Grand Swiss 2023 Women. Mariya's ambitious play backfired badly as it was her opponent who got an opportunity to launch a devastating attack on the kingside. GM Arjun Erigaisi and GM Aravindh Chithambaram, both playing with black pieces, missed great winning opportunities against GM Alexandr Predke (SRB) and GM Nikita Vitiugov (ENG). GM Vidit Gujrathi scored his third win in-a-row. He completed his hat-trick of victories against GM Alexei Shirov (ESP). Round 5 starts today at 2:30 p.m. local time, 7 p.m. IST. Andrey Esipenko gains sole lead 3.5/4, Vidit scores a hat-trick
GM Andrei Esipenko emerged sole leader as he defeated the new FIDE World Junior champion, GM Marc`andria Maurizzi (FRA). He is followed by 17 players at 3/4 including top seed GM Fabiano Caruana (USA), GM Hikaru Nakamura (USA), GM Arjun Erigaisi and GM Vidit Gujrathi. In the Women's event, GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) missed a winning opportunity against GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN). Thus, there are four leaders now - Zhongyi, Anna, IM Vaishali R and IM Bibisara Assaubayeva (KAZ).
Mariya - Vaishali: 0-1
This past summer, former Women's World Champion, GM Mariya Muzychuk (UKR, 2519) eliminated IM Vaishali R (2448) from the FIDE Women's World Cup 2023. Those two games were the only Classical rated games they played against each other and on both occassion, Vaishali lost. Apart from those two games, Vaishali had never lost a rated game against Mariya. It was time for Vaishali to avenge the loss of the grand stage.
16.e6?! is a bold choice, considering the fact that White is yet to complete the development of pieces and Black has a bishop pair. 16...f5 17.Bg5 Bxf3 18.gxf3 Qb7 it would not be an understatement to say that White is completely lost. 19.Ne2 Qxf3 20.Bxe7 Rd2 21.Bxc5 Rxe2 22.Qc4 Ng3 23.e7+ Kh8 and it's over.
Predke - Arjun
GM Alexandr Predke (SRB, 2656) made a Greek gift sacrifice 21.Bxh7+? However, it is not as dangerous as White might want it to be as he does not have enough resource to continue the flow of attack. 21...Kxh7 22.Qh4+ Kg8 23.Ng5 Rxe5 24.Qh7+ Kf8 25.Qh8+ Ke7 26.Qxg7 Rxe1 27.Rxe1+ Kd6 28.Qf6+ Kc5 29.Re7 Qd6 30.Qxf7
Black needed to save the bishop first 30...Bc6 31.Ne6+ Kb4 and the black king is in no danger as White does not have enough material to stir up trouble. 30...Kb4? 31.Rd7 Nd2 is a virtual draw offer as 32.Rxd6 Rc1+ forces a perpetual check with rook and knight.
Niemann - Rapport
In the above position, find out the winning continuation for White which GM Hans Niemann (USA, 2667) executed against GM Richard Rapport (ROU, 2752).
Vidit - Shirov: 1-0
A little over seven years ago, back when the tournament was called Isle of Man Open, GM Vidit Gujrathi (2716) lost to the legendary GM Alexei Shirov (ESP, 2655). After that they faced each other twice at FIDE Belgrade GP 2022. Vidit lost the second game and drew the third one. It was about time for Vidit to score his first win over Shirov in a Classical rated game.
The motive behind 26...Bxa3 is 27.bxa3 Rxc3 utlitizing the fact that the white queen is overworked defending both f5-rook and c3-bishop. However, Black missed the intermediate move 27.Rxf6! gxf6 28.bxa3 Rh3 29.Bb4+ Kg7 30.Rg1+ Kh8 31.Rg3 Rxg3 32.hxg3 Kg7 33.Bc2 Rh8 34.d5 Qa7 35.Qf3 and it's over.
Vitiugov - Aravindh
27.Kb2?? invited Nc4+! 28.Bxc4 dxc4 29.Rb5 a6 30.Rc5 and now Rb8+ would have led to a win for Aravindh. Instead, he went 30...Re8. Black's advantage slowly evaporated and White got some chances. However, it ended in a draw eventually in a queen endgame.
Anna Muzychuk - Zhongyi
After getting such a position which ideally should be winning for White, GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR, 2510) is bound to be disappointed to repeat the same result as the FIDE Women's World Cup 2023 against her longtime rival GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN, 2517).
