Kateryna Lagno wins FIDE Astana GP, Vaishali impresses
GM Kateryna Lagno drew her final round game against GM Alexandra Kosteniuk to win FIDE Astana GP. The former World Rapid and three-time World Blitz Women's champion scored 8/11. IM Vaishali R had great chances to beat GM Aleksandra Goryachkina. Unfortunately, she could not seize her opportunity. The former World Women's Championship Challenger, Goryachkina scored 7.5/11 to finish second. WGM Zhu Jiner scored (CHN) made 6.5/11 to finish third. Vaishali had an impressive debut. She scored 5/11, suffered only two losses and gained 1.6 Elo rating points. Her performance speaks volumes that she is ready for the big leagues. Photo: FIDE/Anna Shtourman
Goryachkina survives a massive scare against Vaishali
The more opportunity Vaishali gets to play against stronger opponents, the better she will get. It was clear in her final round game against GM Aleksandra Goryachkina. The India no.3 woman finished ahead of former Women's World champion, GM Tan Zhongyi, Germany no.1 woman for almost two decades, IM Elisabeth Paehtz and reigning World Blitz Women's champion, IM Bibisara Assaubayeva (KAZ). She is destined to be a GM, if she continues to keep getting better and stronger in each tournament she plays in.
Dinara - Shuvalova: 1-0
WGM Dinara Wagner (GER, 2358) launched an attack on IM Polina Shuvalova's (2510) kingside.
It was certainly not an easy position for Black and she did not respond correctly. 24...Kf8 hastened the black king's demise after 25.fxe5 Qxe5 26.Qg5 gxf5 27.Bd4 f4 28.Bxe5 N7xe5 29.Rxf4 Nxf4 30.Qxf4 and soon White won the game.
Vaishali - Goryachkina: 0.5-0.5
IM Vaishali R (2449) got a good position in the middlegame against GM Aleksandra Goryachkina (2579). She needed to find a tactical way to liquidate into a favorable major piece endgame.
20...f6 was not a good idea. Can you find out what White needed to do to gain the upper hand? The game continued 21.Nf3 Ng6 22.Bxd6 cxd6 23.Qb3 Nf4 24.Re4 Nxh3+ 25.Kg2 Ng5 26.Nxg5+ fxg5 27.Qxd5+ and White eventually got a decisive advantage in the rook endgame.
White is completely winning this endgame. The first thing White needs to take care of is, bring the king quickly towards the center. Since g6 is not possible, 53.Kf4 is the most plausible move as Black can neither defend the b4-pawn, nor capture the d4-pawn easily. 53.Rxb4 g6 54.fxg6+ Kxg6 55.Rb6+ Kg7 56.d5 Rf1 57.b4? and the game entered into a draw Kf7 saved the day for Black.
