New Delhi GP Round 5: Humpy bounces back, Vaishali draws
Koneru Humpy made a strong comeback in Round 5 after suffering a loss in the previous round. She showed why she is the World no.2 when she scored an emphatic victory against the Georgia no.1 Nana Dzagnidze. IM Vaishali did not hesitate to sacrifice an exchange when the position demanded against GM Nino Batsiashvili. She recovered it eventually and the game ended in a draw. WGM Zhu Jiner showed her tactical awareness when her opponent GM Kateryna Lagno was caught off guard as she increased the vulnerability of her own king. IM Bibisara Assaubayeva shuffled her king from the king to queenside after GM Harika Dronavalli made a fundamental mistake in the opening. Round 6 of New Delhi GP 2023 starts today at 3 p.m. IST. Three decisive games
Once again the majority of the games, three out of four ended decisively. GM Harika Dronavalli landed herself in trouble by making a series of questionable choices. It allowed her opponent, the reigning two-time World Blitz Women champion to shift her king from g1 to a2, after the king moved to f1 and g1 from its initial position.
Dzagnidze - Humpy: 0-1
The last time Georgia no.1 GM Nana Dzagnidze (2525) and World no.2 among women, GM Koneru Humpy (2576) squared off at the Munich GP last month, it ended in a draw. Before that their previous Classical encounter was at 44th Olympiad which was won by Humpy with the white pieces. Dzagnidze opted for QGD Exchange variation and managed to destroy Black's pawn structure. However, the price for it was the king being stranded at the center of the board.
Humpy executed an excellent idea to lift her to h6 and then transfer it to the queenside. The reason is simple - the rook at h8 is not doing much, transferring it to the queenside and attempt to gain an entry from there is the best practical decision Black can do in the above position. 23...Rh6 24.e4 Rc6 25.Qd3 Ra6 26.Re2 Ra3 27.Qc4 Ra4 28.Qc3 Qf6 White cannot avoid the loss of the d4-pawn without further worsening the position. 29.Rc2 Qxd4+ 30.Qxd4 Rxd4 31.Ke3 Ra4 Black went back on attacking the weak a2-pawn and soon she captured it to completely shift the advantage on her side.
Zhu Jiner - Lagno
GM Kateryna Lagno (2560) moved her knight to d6. It invited trouble. Can you find out what WGM Zhu Jiner (2489) played in the above position? Try to calculate the entire line and variations.
