Norway Chess Women 2024 R8: Vaishali wins Armageddon against Anna, Wenjun leaps to the top
Anna Muzychuk (UKR) drew against Vaishali in the Classical game of Round 8 at Norway Chess Women 2024. Vaishali mentioned in the Confession booth that she went all out in Jobava London as she suffered two consecutive Classical losses before this. Vaishali won the back and forth Armageddon on time. The position on the board was equal in a double rook endgame. Reigning Women's World Champion, Wenjun Ju (CHN) scored three points as she defeated Pia Cramling (SWE) in the Classical. Wenjun is the new sole leader 14.5/24, closely followed by Anna 13/24 and then Vaishali 11.5/24. Tingjie Lei (CHN) scored her first Classical victory of the event against Koneru Humpy. A shake up in the standings
Vaishali - Anna: 1.5-1
After losing her last two games in the Classical, Vaishali (2489) mentioned in the Confession booth that she went all out by playing Jobava London against Anna Muzychuk (UKR, 2505). The game eventually petered out to a draw in a double rook and knight endgame. Anna lost Armageddon on time in an equal rook endgame after a back and forth battle.
Wenjun - Pia: 3-0
Wenjun Ju (CHN, 2558) got the better of Pia Cramling (SWE, 2447) when she incorrectly captured a pawn with her king instead of knight. This win allowed the reigning Women's World Champion to emerge as the new sole leader and surpass Anna.
Tingjie - Humpy: 3-0
A mistake in the rook and bishop endgame cost Koneru Humpy (2545) dearly against Tingjie Lei (CHN, 2548).
39...Ke7 40.Rxb6 Rc2 41.Bd3 Rxh2 would have kept the fight going. The obvious 39...Be6? allows White to gain the decisive advantage 40.Rxb6 hxg4 41.Bxg4 Rc4+ 42.Kf3 and White eventually won the game.

Format
6 players will take part in the Tournament.
The Tournament is a double-round event with Armageddon.
The Tournament consists of 10 rounds.
Time Control
Each player will have 120 minutes on the clock with an increment of 10 seconds starting from move 41. The time control for the Armageddon game: white has 10 minutes and black has 7 minutes with an increment for both players of 1 second per move, starting from move 41.
Draw by Mutual Agreement
Players are not allowed to agree to a draw until at least 30 moves have been made by each player. This rule does not apply to Armageddon games.
Armageddon
If the classical game is drawn, an Armageddon game will be played. It shall start within 20 minutes of the conclusion of the classical game. The player with White pieces will continue with White in Armageddon. If the Armageddon game is drawn, black will win.

Players will get the following points per round:
Win in the classical game: 3 points
Loss in the classical game: 0 points
Draw in the classical game & win Armageddon: 1½ points
Draw in the classical game & loss Armageddon: 1 point
Schedule
From 27th May to 7th June, every day game starts at 5 p.m. local time and 8:30 p.m. IST. Rest days are on Friday 31st May and Wednesday 5th June.

Prize Money The total prize fund of the Tournament is 1690000 NOK. Distribution of Prize money occurs as followed:
1st - NOK 700000
2nd - NOK 350000

5th - NOK 150000
