Hanyu Sun wins Sardinia World Chess Festival 2024 Open C

Ertan Ozdogan (TUR), Luca Ferraro (ITA) and Hanyu Sun (CHN) were the coleaders 7/8 heading into the final round of Sardinia World Chess Festival 2024 Open C (<1600). Luca lost to Daniele Isaia (ITA), Ertan won against Krishnan Vishwanathan and Hanyu defeated Manuel Serra (ITA). Both Hanyu and Ertan ended up with the same score 8/9 each. Hanyu became champion due to better tie-break score, Ertan secured second place. Hanyu's sole loss of the event was against the eventual runner-up, Ertan in Round 3. Luca finished third. Ertan's solitary defeat was against Luca in Round 5. The total prize fund of the entire festival was €50000. The top three prizes in Open C were €1200, €800 and €600 along with a trophy each. Top two score 8/9

The Open C (Below 1600) category had only 27 participants. However, the competition was tough for the championship. Three players were fighting for the first place. Only two of them managed to score the same. Despite the loss in the final round, the previous round coleader still managed to finish third. Players ranged from 8 to 97 years in this category.

A total of 99 players took part from 19 countries across the world in this eight-day nine-round Swiss league Below 2000 Rating tournament which was organized by Emmedi Sport ASD at Club Hotel Marina Beach 4* at Orosei in Sardinia, Italy from 27th April to 4th May 2024. The time control for the tournament was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment.
