Women's Candidates 2024 R10: Vaishali ends her losing streak by winning a rollercoaster game against Nurgyul

GM Vaishali R ended her losing streak in the tenth round of FIDE Women's Candidates 2024. Vaishali was lost the better part of the endgame against IM Nurgyul Salimova (BUL). However, after a lot of mutual blunders, it was the youngest player in the field, Nurgyul who made the final big mistake. Vaishali's both wins at this event happened against the same opponent. GM Tingjie Lei (CHN) defeated GM Aleksandra Goryachkina to join the lead with GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) 6.5/10. Goryachkina blundered in the endgame which should have ended in a draw. GM Vaishali scored her second win of the event against the same opponent - IM Nurgyul Salimova (BUL)

GM Vaishali R (2475) was lost for the better part of the endgame against IM Nurgyul Salimova (BUL, 2432). However, the youngest player in the field, Nurgyul made the last crucial mistake which cost her the game.

After losing one of the connected center passed pawn on the d-file, White is no longer winning. Yet, White is not lost either. In time trouble, she blundered 67.Kd6? Vaishali seized her opportunity 67...Re3 68.Bd7+ Nxd7 69.exd7+ Kd8 and it's over for White.

Goryachkina - Tingjie

Position after 37.f3?

37.f3? was the first mistake by GM Aleksandra Goryachkina (2553). It allowed Black to force the queen exchange Qf2 38.Qf4+ g5 39.Qc7 Qg3+ 40.Qxg3 hxg3+ 41.Kxg3 e5 now White's knight is trapped momentarily. 42.e4 dxe4 43.fxe4 Bc8 44.d5 Kg7 45.Ne6+ Kf7 GM Tingjie Lei (CHN, 2550) kept pushing for a win. Ultimately, Goryachkina blundered which ideally should have ended in a draw.

Time control

The time control for each game is 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move starting from move 1.

Prizes

The total prize fund is €250000. The top three prizes are €24000, €18000 and €12000. All prize money shall be divided equally among the players with the equal score after 14 rounds regardless tie-break results. In addition, each player gets €1750 euros for every half point scored.
