Tepe Sigeman & Co 2023 R4: Arjun Erigaisi bounces back
Arjun Erigaisi bounced back from his consecutive losses by defeating D Gukesh in the fourth round of 28th TePe Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament 2023. Arjun has never lost a Classical rated game against Gukesh. That fact did not change yesterday. After an inaccurate exchange in the center, Gukesh missed a tactical opportunity to fight back and try to salvage a half point. Arjun capitalized on his second chance and scored his second win of the event. The remaining three games of the round ended in draws. Thus, Abhimanyu Mishra and Peter Svidler are still in the lead 3/4 each, followed by Nils Grandelius and Gukesh at 2.5/4 each. Round 5 starts today at 3 p.m. local time, 6:30 p.m. IST. For the first time at this event, only one game ended decisively and three games were drawn.
Arjun - Gukesh: 1-0
Arjun Erigaisi (2701) has never lost a Classical rated game against D Gukesh (2730). Their last encounter at the 85th Tata Steel Masters earlier this year ended in a draw. Gukesh opted for the Berlin in the Ruy Lopez for the second consecutive game. However, his opponent went with 4.d3 this time, unlike 4.0-0 in the previous game.
23...Rb2 24.Bc2 Bb6 25.Ne3 a4 was a better continuation for Black. 23...cxd4 gave White full control of the center and the d6-pawn being backward did not help Black's case. 24.cxd4 Rb4 25.d5 Bc8 and after a few moves the bishop eventually got an opportunity to re-develop into the game.
32...Bxh3! was needed to be played 33.Re5 Bxg2+ 34.Kh2 Nh3 35.Kxg2 Rh4 36.Qg6+ Kh8 37.Qf5 Nf4+ 38.Kg1 Nh3+ is one of the ways. Instead, 32...Bf5? 33.Rc6 Rd3?? got things out of hand completely for Black. 34.Re5 Black has no resistance left Rxb3 35.Rxf5 f6 36.Rxf4 gxf4 37.Qg6+ Kh8 38.Rc5 and Black resigned as there is not much left to go on.
Time Control
90 minutes for 40 moves and then 30 minutes for the remaining moves with 30 seconds cumulative increment for each move starting from the first move (Malmö rules-no draws before move 40).
