Tepe Sigeman & Co 2023 R2: Gukesh crushes Keymer, now World no.15
D Gukesh made a fantastic start at 28th TePe Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament 2023. He destroyed the Germany no.1 Vincent Keymer when the latter overlooked a bishop sacrifice. It wrecked the kingside and Gukesh had no trouble seizing his advantage. This win made Gukesh's live rating at his career highest 2741 and now he is World no.15. Meanwhile, Arjun Erigaisi dropped the ball on his position when he himself stopped the momentum by making a strange retreat. Later, a desperate rook sacrifice did not work and the Sweden no.1 Nils Grandelius had no trouble wrapping things up. Round 3 will see Svidler vs Arjun and Grandelius vs Gukesh clash starting today at 3 p.m. local time, 6:30 p.m. IST. Photo: David Llada/TePe Sigeman & Co Tournament 2023
All decisive games
Apart from Gukesh and Grandelius, Abhimanyu Mishra (USA) and Peter Svidler won against Jorden van Foreest (NED) and Boris Gelfand (ISR) respectively. Thus, all four games of Round 2 ended decisively.
Gukesh - Keymer: 1-0
D Gukesh (2732) has never lost a rated game against Vincent Keymer (2700). Gukesh has beaten Keymer five times in-a-row in all formats of the game including Chess960 in ten days last year in Biel GMT. It goes without saying that Gukesh had both psychological and statistical edge over his opponent even before a move was made.
Black made a positional mistake 21...Nd6. It allowed White to launch a devastating attack 22.Bxh6! which he was certainly aiming for in this position. 21...exd4 22.cxd4 Qc6 23.e5 Nxb2 24.Bxb2 Qxc2 25.exf6 Rxe1+ 26.Rxe1 Qxb2 27.Ngf5 Bxd4 is what the computer recommends. The maestro Vishy Anand also liked Gukesh's execution of the excellent sacrifice
22...dxe4 23.Qe3 gxh6 24.Qxh6 Re6 25.Ngf5 Ne8 momentarily stops the checkmate and delays the inevitable 26.Qg5+ Kf8 27.Qh5 Nxf5 28.Nxf5 Rg6 29.Bxe4 Qa7 30.Qh8+ Rg8 31.Qh6+ completely suffocates the black king Ng7 32.Nxg7 Rxg7 33.Re3 Bg4 a desperate attempt to gain some kind of semblance 34.Rg3 Bxd4 35.Rxg4 and Black resigned.
Arjun - Grandelius: 1-0
Arjun Erigaisi (2701) has played only one rated game against Nils Grandelius (2664) at the same event last year which ended up in a draw. The teenager started well but suddenly he stopped the momentum of his own position in the middlegame.
White needed to continue his attack on the kingside 16.g5 hxg5 17.Bxg5 Rxc3 18.bxc3 and White is doing fine. Instead, he made a strange retreat 16.Be1 Nc4 17.Rg3 d5 18.g5 too little too late hxg5 19.Rxg5 Qb6 20.Rxg7+ White's pieces are not ready to join the attack and cause a significant impact. 20...Kxg7 21.Qg2+ Kh8 22.Bxc4 Rxc4 23.Rd3 Rg4 Black has managed to save everything and he went on to win the game.
Time Control
90 minutes for 40 moves and then 30 minutes for the remaining moves with 30 seconds cumulative increment for each move starting from the first move (Malmö rules-no draws before move 40).
