D Gukesh drew his Classical game against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in Round 3 of 11th Norway Chess 2023. In Armageddon, Gukesh could have finished things much earlier in a very sharp game. However, things were prolonged. The teenager defended correctly and attacked brilliantly to went on to win the game. Hikaru Nakamura and Magnus Carlsen blitzed out their moves to draw the Classical game. Carlsen won Armageddon. Alireza Firouzja and Fabiano Caruana maintained their unbeaten record intact against Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Aryan Tari in Classical games as they both won. Today is the first rest day. Round 4 starts tomorrow Saturday 3rd June from 5 p.m. local time, 8:30 p.m. IST. All photos in this article are by Lennart Ootes/Norway Chess unless stated otherwise.
Caruana maintains his sole lead 7.5/9
Anish Giri drew against Wesley So in a completely winning position. Since a draw with black pieces in Armageddon is enough, he opted for it. The fourth round will witness the highly anticipated clash between Gukesh and Carlsen.
Mamedyarov - Gukesh: 1-1.5
The Classical encounter between D Gukesh (2732) and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (2738) ended in a draw. Their previous Classical game was at the 44th Chess Olympiad last year, which also ended in a draw. Their Armageddon was a sharp battle which Gukesh could have much earlier.
Mamedyarov - Gukesh, Armageddon
29.Qxg6?? is a blunder. Find out why. 29...Qe3+ 30.Ne2 Nd4? prolonged the game.
Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura drew their first Classical game since August 2019. Carlsen won the Armageddon.
Abdusattorov - Firouzja
Alireza Firouzja (FRA, 2785) has never lost a rated game against Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB, 2731). That remained unchanged. 32.Rc1? incorrect retreat allowed Black to go Re8 33.Qxb6 Ne4 34.Rcd1 Nxf2! 35.Rxe8+ Qxe8 36.Qxf2 Qb5+ 37.Kg1 Rxf2 it was just a matter of time for Black to convert his advantage into a win.
A pretty finish!
Caruana - Tari
Fabiano Caruana (USA, 2764) has never lost a rated game against Aryan Tari (NOR, 2642). The Norwegian have to wait a little longer to make an attempt to change that statistic. 25...Qe7? did not help Black as it did not have any threats and dropped the d5-pawn easily 26.Nxd5 Qe6 27.e4 White got a firm control of the center. 27...Re8 28.Rhe1 Qc8 29.exf5 Re2 30.Rxe2 Qf5 31.c4 Ne5 32.Rde1 Qf3+ 33.Kg1 and Black resigned.
