Kaustav and Arpita win West Bengal Juniors

The 44th West Bengal State Junior tournament was held from the 19th to the 22nd of May 2016. Quite a few strong juniors like Neelash Saha, Mitrabha Guha in the open section and Chandrayee Hajra, Arpita Mukherjee in the girls section took part. In the end Kaustav Kundu and Arpita Mukherjee emerged victorious. We have a short and crisp report sent to us from the city of joy.

The east-Indian state of West Bengal has been producing strong chess players over the years. Like every year the annual national selection tournament was held at Indus Valley World School, Kolkata from 19th to the 22nd of May 2016. There were two sections in this tournament: the open and the girls. There were 183 participants in the open category and 80 in the girls section. The year of 2016 is a golden year for West Bengal because there were the most number of participants in the girls category.

Open Category

The winner of the open section: Kaustav Kundu 

Kaustuv Kundu (rated 2121) was crowned the champion of the open section with 7.0/8 points. Kaustuv defeated the tournament leader Subhayan Kundu in the last round with the black pieces. Earlier Subhayan had already surprised the second seed and the defending champion FM Mitrabha Guha, in the seventh round. Top seed Neelash Saha had a disappointing finish to the tournament scoring 5.5/8.

Girls Category 

WFM Arpita Mukherjee(rated 1957) was crowned the champion of the girls section with 7.0/8 points. Arpita defeated Sudipa Haldar(rated 1535) in the final round to win the crown. Sudipa had a good tournament finishing as the runner up and gaining 68 Elo points. Top seed WCM Chandreyee Hajra (rated 1996) finished ninth scoring 5.5/8, which was the biggest disappointment in the girls section.
