Late Shailesh Nerlikar Memorial Online Blitz Open on 27th June
The chess world is filled with many brave souls, but none so courageous as Shailesh Nerlikar. Shailesh suffered from 100% physical disability and could not walk or even sit. However, he made the game of chess his world and excelled at it getting an initial FIDE rating of 1743 in 2006. In the year 2015 he represented India at the World Disabled Championships held in Germany. In 2018 Shailesh passed away at the age of just 41 years. In order to honour this amazing chess player Victorious Chess Academy run by Shailesh's good friend Kapil Lohana has come forward with an online blitz event on 27th of June 2020. We request the participation of chess players in huge numbers. Photo: Victorious Chess Academy
Victorious Chess Academy presents Late Shailesh Nerlikar Memorial Blitz Open on 27th June at 8 p.m. IST
Victorious Chess Academy presents Late Shailesh Nerlikar Memorial Online Blitz Open 2020 will take place on Saturday with a total prize fund of ₹33000. Entry is free for GMs, IMs, WGMs and WIMs. Entry fee for others is ₹300. The event is open to players all over the world. Registration is Closed.
Who was Shailesh Nerlikar?
In order to know more about Shailesh you can read IM Sagar Shah's heartfelt eulogy here.
Shailesh was one of the bravest chess players we have seen. He was born without any disability. However at the age of five due to an overdose of medicine by a doctor he suffered from Quadriplegia and multiple contracture. It is also known as brittle bones and Shailesh could no longer run or walk. In fact even moving around was not possible for him. Just when life seemed bleak and dark, Shailesh managed to discover chess in his life! Shailesh could not sit while playing, but he would lie down on the side and make his moves. Sometimes he would use a stick to make his moves.
Through a lot of hard work and immense love for the game Shailesh managed to get a rating of 1743 in July 2006. The highlight of his chess career was when he travelled to Dresden in 2015 to represent India at the World Disabled Championships 2015. He scored 2.5/7 but the score was irrelevant. Shailesh's biggest achievement was that he was able to travel outside the country and reach Germany. A humongous task achieved by sheer willpower and determination.
Shailesh passed away rather unexpectedly on 10th of March 2018. Health wise he was doing fine, but his chest started to pain in the night. He was rushed to the hospital, but he couldn't survive. His family and friends were devastated on hearing the news. No one had expected this. It came out of the blue.
The late Shailesh Nerlikar Memorial blitz is a dedication to a person who fought hard to make his dreams come true. In spite of any number of obstacles in his life, Shailesh never gave up. It would be wonderful if you join the tournament and remember the legacy of this great soul.

About online tournaments on Playchess by ChessBase India:
ChessBase India has organized innumerable online events successfully. Here is some feedback about the quality of the events:
GM Vaibhav Suri, winner of 2nd ChessBase Online Blitz tournament
The tournament was conducted quite smoothly and a quite "fun Sunday" event. The participation of Adhiban & Sethuraman definitely added the spark to the event. I guess an Online Blitz Festival would be the next way to go (with different formats - Chess960, Bughouse, Bullet etc). Overall really happy with such events. Way to go!!
GM R R Laxman, former National Blitz Champion
I thank the Chessbase India team once more for their strenous and tireless endeavour to popularise blitz events in India. Considering the fact that the present day time control even in classical format ( unlike the yesteryears) demands quick reflexes and blitz skills , I feel that the entire Chessbase India team is doing an exemplary and praiseworthy job. A boon for Indian chess !!!. Though my performance this time was not satisfactory ,I hope to excel and cherish more pleasant memories from my side in the forthcoming editions of Chessbase India blitz events.
Tushar Bohra, father of Kanishk Bohra
Thanks for enrolling Kanishk for the event. He had a great time playing the games. And a great overall experience.
D Gukesh, youngest GM of India
I am extremely happy to have participated in my first online blitz tmt conducted by ChessBase India and loved the experience and thrill. from the start to the finish its professionally conducted and got the rare opportunity to play several high-class players in a single event and looking forward for its next event
Priti Mahendru, mother of Jaiveer Mahendru
This was our second chessbase online blitz event. My son is 8 years and it was an absolute thrill for him to be playing against titled players ! Thanks a lot for organizing this. We look forward to more such events !
Kushagra Mohan
I was happy the way the tournament was conducted. No problems at all. You just keep increasing the prize money and that is a big improvement.Cannot hope for more.
