World Rapid Team 2024 R5-8: Al-Ain ACMG UAE emerges sole leader, MGD1 maintains pursuit
Al-Ain ACMG UAE has emerged sole leader 14/16 after Round 8 of World Rapid Team Championship 2024. They started the day by handing WR Chess their second consecutive loss. Then they drew with one of then coleaders, Chessy. Royal Chess and Q4Rail Kingsofchess Krakow were the next two teams to go down against the sole leader. Decade China is the only other team who is undefeated along with the sole leader. They are at 13/16. Chessy and MGD1 are third place 12/16 each. MGD1 defeated Chessy to finish the day on a high note and reduce the gap. Magnus Carlsen's team, the defending champions are lagging behind at fifth place 11/16 with Ashdod Chess Club. Magnus Carlsen beats Ding Liren
The 'recreational player' board result turned out to be very crucial for a lot of teams. Decade China Team made the best decision to have two 'recreational players' in their team. Unrated Pang Bo is having a fantastic run. He has scored 7/7 so far. While, Wadim Rosenstein of WR Chess and the one whose brainchild is this event, is having a tough time as he lost seven games in-a-row. His losses are certainly weighing heavy on their team.
Round 5: Al-Ain ACMG UAE beats WR Chess to move to the top, Chessy draws with Decade China
WR Chess suffered their second consecutive loss. This time aaginst Al-Ain ACMG UAE by 2-4. Chess drew 3-3 with Decade China. MGD1 scored second win in-a-row, it was against Q4Rail Kingsofchess Krakow by 5-1. GM Magnus Carlsen (WR Chess, 2827) scored the sole win for his team against GM Daniil Dubov (Al-Ain ACMG UAE, 2716). Dubov did not follow through correctly after his knight sacrifice.

This position should definitely make it to future chess books. In an equal queen and minor piece endgame, GM Ian Nepomniachtchi (WR Chess, 2753) blundered 48...b5?? Find out the winning continuation for White. His opponent, GM Parham Maghsoodloo (Al-Ain ACMG UAE, 2653) noticed it after playing 48.Qd8+ Ke5 49.axb5 Nxb5.

Round 6: Chessy draws with Al-Ain ACMG UAE, Decade China joins them in the lead
Chessy drew their second consecutive match of the day. It was against one of the leaders, Al-Ain ACMG UAE. Decade China defeated MGD1 4-2 to join the lead with the aforementioned teams. WR Chess bounced back after their two consecutive losses. They defeated Hunnu Air.
Sumiya - Carlsen
GM Sumiya Bilguun (Hunnu Air, 2439) needed to focus on his advantage and push the passed pawn 43.h4. However, he momentarily prevented the exchange of rooks 43.Nf3 Kd6 44.e5+ Ke7 Black managed to get out of danger and eventually win the game.
Round 7: Decade China, Chessy and Al-Ain ACMG UAE maintain their lead, MGD1 bounces back
Decade China defeated Ashdod Chess Club 4.5-1.5 without conceding a single game. GM Nihal Sarin (Ashdod Chess Club, 2664) held the world champion, GM Ding Liren (Decade China, 2775) to a draw. World Champions Higher School went down to WR Chess 2-4. IM Kirill Shubin (WCHS) scored an upset win over GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov (WR Chess). Al-Ain ACMG UAE scored a victory over Royal Chess by same score 4.5-1.5 without losing any game. Kazchess lost to Chessy 2-4. MGD1 won the match against Astana-1 by 4-2.
Round 8: MGD1 beats Chessy, Al-Ain ACMG UAE gains sole lead
WR Chess drew with Decade China 3-3. Magnus Carlsen's win over Ding Liren was evened out by Pang Bo's (Decade China) win over Wadim Rosenstein (WR Chess). Pang won seven in-a-row while Wadim lost seven consecutive games after winning his sole first round game.

Carlsen made a rare mistake in the endgame 48.Qxc5 allowing the world champion to get back in the game Qf6 49.Kxg4 Qf1 50.Kg3 Bf6? soon White managed to transfer his queen to the kingside to come to the aid of the king and win the game.

Team composition
Each team will consist of at least six and maximum nine players. Apart from having to include at least one female player, just like last year, teams will have to include a recreational player, who has never achieved a Standard, Rapid or Blitz FIDE rating of 2000 or more. It is not mandatory for the teams to have board order as per rating. For more details, please check the tournament regulations, link provided at the end of the article.
Format
The 12-round Swiss League team event has a time control of 15 minutes + 10 seconds increment from move no.1. There is no default time. No penalty shall be imposed on a player if he/she is late for any of his/her games. Scoring is usual for a team event. Match points: Win = 2, Draw = 1 and Loss = 0.

Prize
The total prize fund is €250000 in Rapid and €100000 in Blitz. There are six prizes in Rapid - top five and one rating category. The top three prizes are: €100000, 60000 and 40000 each respectively. Best U2400 will earn €12500. For Blitz, there are four prizes with a total of €100000. They are - €40000, €25000, €17500 and €17500 each.
