Aakanksha Hagawane wins Gold at FISU World University Mind Sports 2024 Women, Silver for Saina Salonika

WIM Aakanksha Hagawane, WIM Saina Salonika, WIM Alicja Sliwicka (POL) and WGM Julia Antolak (POL) scored 6.5/9 each at FISU World University Championship Mind Sports 2024. Aakanksha won Gold due to better tie-break score. Saina secured Silver and Alicja Bronze. Both Aakanksha and Saina remained undefeated. They are the only two Indians to earn medals. The eventual Gold medalist, Aakanksha drew with both runners-up. Saina however, handed the eventual Bronze medal winner, Alicja, her sole loss of the event in the second round. This was Aakanksha's first tournament triumph of the year. WIM Aakanksha Hagawane (2149) gained positional advantage in the middlegame against WGM Julia Antolak (POL, 2306). 19...f4? did not help Black's case 20.Nc5 Qg6 21.Qe4 Qh5 22.e6!+- and White went on to win the game in another ten moves.

A total of 30 players including a WGM and five WIMs took part from ten countries across the world in the Women Classical event. The six-day nine round Rating tournament was organized by Association of Uganda University Sports - AUUS & Uganda Chess Federation - UCF at Entebbe Botanical Beach Hotel in Entebbe, Uganda from 25th to 30th June 2024. The time control of the event was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment.
