30th Abu Dhabi Masters R4: Goutham Krishna outplays Supi in the endgame, joins the lead
IM-elect FM Goutham Krishna H defeated his second consecutive GM in Round 4 of 30th Abu Dhabi Masters 2024. The Brazil no.1, GM Luis Paulo Supi made an incorrect decision to not trade queens at the right time and he had to pay a heavy price for it. He joins 13 more players in the lead 3.5/4. Seven out of the 14 leaders are Indians. They are - GM Pranav V, GM Bharath Subramaniyam H, GM B Adhiban, GM Raunak Sadhwani, GM S L Narayanan and GM Leon Luke Mendonca. The reigning World Junior champion, IM Divya Deshmukh made a great escape from a losing endgame against Turkiye's youngest GM in history - Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus. Divya Deshmukh salvages a draw against Turkiye's youngest GM Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus
Second seed of the tournament, GM Aravindh Chithambaram suffered a shocking loss against GM Klementy Sychev. The highest rated Indian did not simplify in the endgame at the right time which turned out to haunt him.
Sychev - Aravindh
56...Rxd2+ 57.Rxd2 Nc4+ 58.Kc2 Nxd2 59.Kxd2 Qd7+ is how GM Aravindh Chithambaram (2703) should have simplified things. Instead, 56...e4?? 57.Nxe4+- Qe5 58.Nf6+ and things went completely in GM Klementy Sychev's (2531) way.
Sandipan - Raunak
How should White respond to 19...d4 fork? GM Sandipan Chanda (2488) chose incorrectly 20.Bb5?? Rxe4!-+ gave GM Raunak the decisive advantage. 20.e5 is what White needed to play.
GM Leon Luke Mendonca (2621) won a wild game against IM Tao Pang (CHN, 2476).
Divya - Yagiz
Turkiye's youngest GM Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus (2599) is completely winning the endgame. Yet, he needed to make a critical decision in the above position 76...Bf3?? allowed his opponent, the reigning World Junior Girls champion, IM Divya Deshmukh (2472) to escape with a draw. Find out why it is a mistake and what Black should have done instead to win the game.
Goutham - Supi
Should Black trade queens in the above position? The computer says yes. 26...Qxb3 27.axb3 a5 gives Black better fighting chances than by keeping the queens on the board. Brazil no.1, GM Luis Paulo Supi (2571) decided against exchanging the queens. 26...Qd4 27.Kg2 a5 28.Qb5 Kh7 29.Qc6 Qb2 30.a4 and White went on to win the game.
