29th Tepe Sigeman & Co 2024 R1: Arjun Erigaisi outplays Wenjun, now World no.5
Arjun Erigaisi started off 29th TePe Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament 2024 with a win over reigning Women's World Champion - Wenjun Ju (CHN). The win moved him up to World no.5 in the live ratings. Wenjun played a line in the Grunfeld which she herself won with the white pieces. However, in this game, it was Arjun who deviated and capitalized on his opponent's mistake. Anton Korobov (UKR) also started with a win as he seized his opportunity against Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) in the endgame. Marc` Andria Maurizzi's (FRA) ambitious approach did not work against Vincent Keymer (GER). The defending champion, Peter Svidler drew against the Sweden no.1 - Nils Grandelius. Round 2 starts tomorrow Sunday 28th May at 3 p.m. local time, 6:30 p.m. IST. Photo: Mikael Svensson/tepesigemanchess.com

Arjun - Wenjun: 1-0
Arjun Erigaisi (2756) sacrificed an exchange sacrifice offered by the reigning Women's World Champion, Wenjun Ju (CHN, 2559). She had played this line against her fellow compatriot Kaiyu Ning (CHN) and won with white pieces.
Black played 12...cxd4 allowing 13.Nb6 Qe6 14.Nxa8 Qxe5 15.Qb3 deviating from Wenjun's earlier win Nc7. Black had enough compensation until she incorrectly recaptured a bishop.
19.Bxf6 exf6? Black needed to go Bxf6 to keep things in balance 20.Qb5 Nc5 21.b4 d3 22.f3 Qd4 would have been a sharp but a better continuation for Black. Instead, 19...exf6? displaced the queen after 20.h3 Qg5 21.Qb5 Rd8 22.Re8+ Rxe8 23.Qxg5 fxg5 24.Nxe8 and White soon won the game.
