1st Guwahati International GM Open starts in four days
Guwahati, Assam and North East India will be the host to the biggest international GM Open tournament in the region starting this Sunday 13th March. Press Conference for the 1st Guwahati International GM Open tournament 2022 was held yesterday 8th March at Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium (Sarusajai). The tournament will take place from 13th to 20th March at DTRP Indoor Stadium in Guwahati, Assam. Total prize fund of the tournament is ₹1500000. Top three prizes are - ₹251000, ₹201000 and ₹150000 each. Total 51 prizes are up for grabs. 207 players from 11 countries across the world have already registered for this event. Press Conference
• All Assam Chess Association, the official State body for the game of Chess and the National Chess body: All India Chess Federation are all set to organize the First Guwahati International Grandmasters Open Chess Tournament with the support of the Sports Authority of India, Government of India and Government of Assam in Guwahati, from 14th March to 20th March, 2022.
• The total Prize Fund alone is 15 Lakh. SAI, Government of India has already approved 15 Lakh and disbursed 75% which is reserved as the Prize money.
• Top Grandmasters and International Masters from 14 countries have already confirmed their participation.
• Players from the following Countries have already confirmed: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, India, Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Paraguay, Russia, Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan and Zambia.
• 13 Grandmasters, 3 Woman Grandmaster, 13 International Masters, 5 FIDE Masters, 2 Woman International Masters, total 200 Chess Players are already enlisted to participate in the Tournament. The number will increase over the next one week.
• From India, players from Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhatisgarh, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Telengana, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, West Bengal apart from Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, total 22 states are already enlisted to play. The number may increase during next week.
• The Tournament will provide Norms and Rating opportunities to the players. Players who will defeat or do better with rated players will get International Rating points, and for players scoring certain specific points against higher titled players will get Norms for Titles as per FIDE Rules.
• This type of Tournament as well as such a grand event of International scale has never happened before in Assam or entire North East India in the arena of Chess till now.
• Now we have only one International Master Shahil Dey in the entire North East India. For Rating and particularly for Norms required for getting a Title, all players has to go abroad. If we organise Tournameents like this, then we can get more IM and possibly GM from this region, and we can create a Chess Hub in Assam and entire North East India.
